Oral Care in the Summer Heat!

It is important to stay hydrated in the hot weather for many reasons; especially for your oral tissues.  Dehydration slows down healing in the body, therefore affecting your body’s reaction to the bacteria in your mouth.  Dehydration also decreases your salivary flow, making it difficult to wash away food particles, increasing plaque build up and potential for cavities.

Be sure to wear chapstick as well! The harmful UV rays from the sun often affect the lips; this is due to many people not realizing  they need to wear protection such as chapstick with SPF on a daily basis, especially if they work outside. If you start to notice the border of your lips is diminishing, be sure to point it out to your dentist or your dermatologist.
