Recent News for Patients with Diabetes and Gum Disease

We already know that Diabetes is a systemic disease that can lead to serious issues with gum disease if not controlled. This is because patients with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. But what if periodontal disease is already present with a patient that has Type II Diabetes? In the situation where the patient has diabetes, periodontal disease can increase blood sugar thus, increasing diabetic complications.

Studies are beginning to show that basic dental care may not be enough to reduce the effects of periodontal disease in patients with Type II Diabetes.
